Santa’s ‘Flight before Christmas’ brings smiles to those in need of cheer

Akron Children’s Air Bear is accustomed to transporting very precious cargo, and the morning of Christmas Eve was no different. It safely brought Santa and Mrs. Claus to visit with our patients during his annual “Flight before Christmas.”

A few braved the below-freezing temperatures outside to see the medical helicopter land in the hospital’s Perkins Square Park, while others waited in the warm lobby or wiggled in their beds.

About 160 children each received a beautifully wrapped, age-appropriate toy, a stuffed animal as well as holiday-themed gifts including Pinkie the Puppet, a pillow case, a blanket and a coloring book. Room by room over several hours Santa and his elves saw every boy and girl open their gifts.

The generosity of the entire community – from local businesses and schools to previous patients and their parents giving back to others – enabled our volunteers to create a festive spirit that put a smile on so many faces. We are certain it’s a Christmas Eve they won’t forget.
