Akron Children’s Hospital is fortunate to have such a smart, talented and compassionate pediatric plastic surgeon as Dr. Ananth Murthy.

Dr. Murthy grew up in Stow, Ohio, and attended medical school at Northeast Ohio Medical University, but got a taste of big city life while doing his craniofacial surgery fellowship at the Children’s Hospital Boston and then moving onto practice at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC.

He decided to return home four years ago when he joined our medical staff.

Dr. Murthy will be featured in an upcoming Q & A in Children’s Hospitals Today, a publication of the Children’s Hospital Association.

Here’s a sneak peek:

What do you love most about your job?

The part of the operation when I’m putting in the final sutures in a cleft lip correction, knowing that I’ve done my best.

What is your biggest fear?

Complications–I fear and loathe them. I try to minimize them every day.

Who or what inspires you?

Dr. Joseph Murray, a plastic surgeon who performed the first kidney transplant, and pretty much all the Rocky movies.

What do you like to do on your day off?

I love to get up early and get in a round of golf, so I can be home for a picnic with my family! Someday soon, I’m hoping for a tee-time with my wife and daughters (currently impossible because my girls will: a) not leave the first bunker we come across, and b) yell and scream during my backswing.

Three words that describe yourself:

Compassion, competence, optimism

What gets you through your busiest days?

Coffee and Twizzlers!

What is your proudest accomplishment?

My proudest moments have been gifted to me like the birth of my daughters. However, I have yet to achieve my proudest accomplishment.

What’s your biggest dream?

Tissue engineering a human ear.

What traits do you look for in a friend?

Reliability, wit, trust
