To show thanks to for the care she has received at Akron Children’s Hospital, Marisa will be participating in a campaign at Giant Eagle stores, which will benefit Akron Children’s Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders.
In January 2010, Marisa was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, cancer of the white blood cells, which are primarily known for fighting infections.
Marisa said the hardest part of being sick was not getting to do what normal young adults get to do.
“I was basically just a couch potato,” said Marisa. “I couldn’t hang out with my friends because my immune system was so low.”
This past April marked one year since Marisa has had any treatments, but she still has to have monthly blood counts.
Marisa said the best part of having Akron Children’s Hospital is the “personal care.”
“Here they treat me as if I’m their own child,” said Marisa. “The personal attention I get is great.”
Giant Eagle stores in Stark, Summit, Medina and Portage counties are collecting donations on behalf of the Akron Children’s Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders from May 30 – June 26.
Make sure to tell your cashier you would like to donate $1 to help patients like Marisa.
