Ron Brubaker, from Giant Eagle, presents Dr. Jeffery Hord with a check for $78,395 at hematology/oncology awareness night at the Akron Aeros’ game.

Representatives from Giant Eagle presented Akron Children’s Hospital with a check for $78,395 during the Akron Aeros’ hematology/oncology awareness night at Canal Park on Aug. 23.

The money was raised earlier this summer at 26 Giant Eagle stores in Portage, Summit and Stark counties and benefits the Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Akron Children’s Hospital.

The check was presented to Dr. Jeffery Hord, director of childhood cancer and blood disorders, after a moment of silence was held for former and current cancer and blood disorder patients.

Throughout the last three years, shoppers at Giant Eagle have raised more than $168,000 to benefit the patients of the Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders, which treats more than 40 patients each day.
