Tuesday, Dec. 3 is #GivingTuesday, a national effort focused on supporting community organizations and philanthropy. Akron Children’s Hospital will be participating in #GivingTuesday, and we hope you will, too.
This year, online donations will benefit the Courage for Carina Gift Card fund, which supports families like the Richardsons, who are receiving care from the Haslinger Family Pediatric Palliative Care Center at Akron Children’s Hospital.
Their daughter, Serenity, was born weighing 1 pound 4 ounces, and spent six months in Akron Children’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
The Gift Card fund provides gift cards to stores such as Giant Eagle, Best Buy, Toys “R” Us and other businesses, to families who are in need.
“We used the cards for groceries and gas,” said Chaunte. “It was really hard to get back and forth to the hospital; to be up there with Serenity and be home with our five boys too.”
The gift cards were especially helpful to the Richardsons when Chaunte was admitted to the hospital to give birth to Serenity.
“When I was admitted to the hospital, for what I thought was going to be a short stay, Joseph, my husband, actually lost his job,” said Chaunte. “There were times when we didn’t know how we were going to make ends meet.”
“When families have special needs children, it really takes a load off them to not have to worry how they are going to be able to afford certain things,” said Chaunte. “It really brings tears to my eyes to know that there is excellent support during hard times.”
“Akron Children’s Hospital is so awesome, especially the Palliative Care team,” Chaunte added.
