We’ve undergone a major renovation. There’s a new area dedicated for sedation services as well as an updated ultrasound scanning area. Most importantly, we’ve installed a new, top-of-the-line MRI.
In technical terms, it’s a Siemens Magnetom Aera 1.5T MRI scanner. In practical terms, it’s a very advanced piece of medical imaging equipment that will allow us to diagnose illnesses in children even more conveniently and efficiently.
The bore of the scanner (the hole in the center of the machine where the patient lies) is wider, allowing us to image larger patients more easily. In addition, the bore tunnel is shorter so the patient’s head can be outside the machine for many of the exams we perform below chest level.
If you’ve ever had an MRI, you may have noticed that a piece of equipment is placed over the body part being imaged before you go in the scanner. These are called coils and they come in all different shapes and sizes.
We’ve purchased the most advanced coils available for our new MRI. These will work in tandem with the new MRI scanner to give us very high quality images of the body part your child’s doctor needs to know about.
Another exciting component of our new MRI is its software package. Now we’ll be able to use advanced techniques for which Mahoning Valley patients previously had to travel to our Akron campus.
As far as I’m concerned though, the best parts of the whole system are already here. They’ve been here all along – the people who work here.
Our staff of technologists, nurses and support personnel is second to none. They are a team of talented, caring people whose goal is to provide the best care possible to the children of the Mahoning Valley. They are excited to see what our new MRI can do and I’m excited to be a member of their team.
