Sea creatures, sunshine and smiles were on hand recently when Akron Children’s patients and their families were treated to an aquatic-themed carnival in the Emily Cooper Welty Expressive Therapy Center.
The Underwater Adventure carnival was presented by the Kay® Jewelers Diversity Leadership Team (DLT). The DLT comprises 33 team members from across the organization who collaborate to propose progressive and innovative ideas that contribute to the long-term success of the organization.
The carnival featured activities for patients of all ages and abilities including games, crafts, face painting and a photo booth.
“I brought my NICU graduate twins, Kohyn and Kasen, to the carnival and was blown away at how well organized and thought out it was,” said Nell Wertz. “At 3 years old, the twins were able to participate in every event, while each also had obvious appeal to older children.”
The DLT selected Akron Children’s for its 2014 service activity based upon the long-standing relationship that the Kay® corporate team has with the hospital. For several years, local Kay® Team Members have provided financial support to Akron Children’s through various corporate giving initiatives.
“These kids made me happier than I made them, just seeing their smiles melted my hearts,” said Amy, a member of the Kay® Jewelers DLT. “They are my heroes!”
“It was fantastic to see how our Expressive Therapy Center came alive with all the patients and their families who were having fun playing games and not thinking about being in the hospital,” said Gyorgyi Mihalyi-Jewell, coordinator at the center. “We are grateful to the Kay® Jewelers DLT because the Underwater Adventure was both meaningful and memorable for our patients.”
