When Victoria Alarcon moved to Warren, Ohio, from the San Diego area in October 2013 her first priority was to find convenient, experienced healthcare providers for her daughter.
Sixteen years old at the time, Denise Noriega was born with a severe liver condition that has resulted in 2 liver transplants – the first at age 2 – and chronic gastro and neurological issues throughout her life.
“We were very blessed to find Dr. Amy Young (at Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics-Warren). She’s experienced treating conditions like Denise’s, plus she’s from California like us,” Alacron said. “But what I kept asking was, ‘When is Children’s going to open a lab nearby?’ We were so happy when that happened in November.”
Before Akron Children’s opened its special services facility in Warren, Alacron had to take Denise to independent, outpatient labs where a 2- or 3-day turnaround for results was the norm, and technicians weren’t always experienced with children.
It also sometimes involved Alacron calling the lab to prompt it to send the results to Denise’s doctor.
“It was very, very inconvenient to use the outside labs,” Alacron said. “Now we go right to the new Children’s lab in Warren. The technicians are friendly because they work with kids. It’s nice, it’s clean, and they’re friendly and accommodating, not only to Denise, but to everyone. And it’s a lot more efficient. The lab gets the orders right from the doctor, and results are delivered much faster, oftentimes the same day.”
The 5,000-square-foot space, located at The Market Place, 5000 E. Market Street in Warren, opened in November and features 9 exam rooms, 3 assessment rooms, and rooms for ultrasound, lab draws, radiology and echocardiograms room.
Services include cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, urology, lab and radiology.
