Hannah Rhodes, DO, a hospitalist at Akron Children’s Hospital’s Beeghly campus, becomes part of a patient’s world when they’re admitted to the hospital. Here, she helps primary care physicians diagnose and manage a child’s care during their stay as an inpatient. Although her personalized, daily bedside visits help her get to know patients’ needs by heart, some of her young patients may be impressed to learn that she also knows all the words to Part of Your World from Disney’s The Little Mermaid by heart, too.
Q: What celebrity do you look the most like or what sitcom character do you act the most like?
A: Many people have told me I look like Katherine Heigl (from the early days of Grey’s Anatomy.) I think it’s probably just the blonde hair and white coat!
Q: Why did you want to become a doctor?
A: I was 4 when I decided I wanted to be a pediatrician because I loved babies. In second grade my teacher, Dr. Waite-Stupiansky, brought in a hunk of bone from the butcher and taught us about the bone marrow. I was so amazed at how much was going on inside the body that we couldn’t see. It was then that I fell in love with science and biology.
Q: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 3 items would you bring with you and why?
- Lip balm because I’ve not been able to live without it since Bonne Belle Lip Smackers in middle school. Now I prefer local, organic lip balm or Burt’s Bees.
- Water purifier because plain water is my favorite thing to drink so I don’t think I could live off of coconut water alone.
- Kindle because I’m pretty sure I could be quite happy reading books on an island for as long as it took to be rescued!
Q: What is the last thing you do before you go to sleep?
A: Write down 3 gifts I experienced that day.
Q: What song do you know all the words to by heart?
A: Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid.
Q: Who makes up your family, including pets?
A: My husband, Adam, who loves me so well and makes me laugh every day, and our rescued Siamese mix, Mulan.
Q: What did you want to be (profession) when you were little?
A: My mom has this written down as a quote that I once said, “I want to be a doctor, a mom and a tree.” I’m a 1/3 of the way so far!
Q: What was your first paying job?
A: I had the great pleasure of working at a family-owned chocolate shop called Ritz Chocolate & Candy Co. in my hometown of Corry, PA. Our families became great friends. It was there that I learned the art of customer service and the skill of making change without a calculator! I also ate hundreds of buckeyes and chocolate covered strawberries. Thank goodness for my teenage metabolism!
Q: What’s your quote, mantra or personal slogan you live by?
A: I try to remember that everything we have and experience is grace, a gift from our God who loves us. I think this quote is a nice reminder of that: “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” – Albert Einstein
Q: Something you’ve always wanted to do and still want to do it?
A: I really want to learn to sew well enough to make my own clothes.
