Although a patient’s room at Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics in Green doesn’t look like a recording studio, when new physician Leigh Wells, DO steps in the room she’s ready to hear the next big thing. She’s not looking for a one-hit wonder, rather she’s ready to listen and provide one-to-one care that gets infants, children and teens feeling better. She makes sure their hearts are in check, their ears are all clear and the care she prescribes puts a healthy spin on their condition to get them back on track.
Q: Why did you want to become a doctor?
A: I was always drawn to medicine and I love working with kids. You can’t take yourself too seriously when you work with kids all day so becoming a pediatrician was really the only way I imagined myself as a doctor.
Q: If you could be a character in a movie, which movie would it be and why?
A: Hermione in Harry Potter. Why? I mean, it’s Harry Potter and Hermione is amazing!
Q: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 3 items would you bring with you and why?
A: Probably 1) a water purifier kit 2) a Swiss Army knife and 3) a GPS tracker/beacon so I can send out an S.O.S. signal the second I get stranded. I’m definitely no Tom Hanks, like in Cast Away, so I probably wouldn’t make it a week!
Q: What did you eat for breakfast? If nothing, what’s your favorite breakfast?
A: I’m a big brunch fan rather than just breakfast. Starting off the day with brunch, especially with friends, is the best.
Q: What song do you know all the words to by heart?
A: Someone Like You by Adele. The song still breaks my heart.
Q: Where did you grow up?
A: I grew up near Fort Wayne, IN in a very rural area where my neighbors were Amish.
Q: What was your favorite childhood toy?
A: Oh, absolutely the Talkboy; the early 90’s cassette recorder. I had a very misguided notion that I would be a famous singer when I grew up so I had concerts and recorded myself non-stop. Thank goodness all those tapes were lost!
Q: What couldn’t you live without?
A: Coffee. I adore it so much. I love trying new coffee shops around the Akron area.
Q: If you could invite anyone to dinner, who would it be and why?
A: I would pick 2 people. I’d love to have Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States) because she is a formidable and fascinating woman. I’d also love to meet and have dinner with Cheryl Strayed who wrote Wild and Tiny Beautiful Things.
Q: Something you’ve always wanted to do and still want to do it?
A: I really want to travel more. A trip to Europe would be amazing. At the very least, I definitely want to visit Italy and Greece sometime in my life.
Q: Why did you choose to come to Akron Children’s?
A: I was interested from the moment I came to the hospital for a Sub-I rotation as a fourth-year medical student. I was also lucky enough to match here for my residency. After residency, I was fortunate to find a job within the Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics family network. I really love what I do and enjoy my patients so much. It’s truly a perfect fit!
