Identical, twin girls Spencer and Sawyer Miller were born on Jan. 25, 2014, prematurely at 29 weeks due to twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. Spencer was the recipient twin and weighed 2lbs. 6 oz. and Sawyer was the donor twin and weighed 2 lbs. 2 oz. After spending 55 days at Akron Children’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) they were able to go home without any type of breathing assistance.
The girls are now 3 years old and have no major health or developmental issues. In fact, the pediatrician said at their last visit that they are right on track. Spencer weighs 29 lbs. and Sawyer weighs 27 lbs. which is unbelievable considering the fact that they were born at 2 lbs!
Both girls enjoy visiting their grandparents and going to the playground. This summer they will be starting swimming lessons and ballet class. In the fall, they are going to start preschool at the North Canton YMCA.
Spencer enjoys playing with her puppies, kitties and loves to color. Sawyer also enjoys playing with her pets and loves to sing. Both girls are huge Moana fans and love to sing and dance along to the soundtrack and movie every single day!
Our girls have come a long way during the past 3 years. I just want to offer words of encouragement and hope to parents who have had or currently have babies in the NICU. Each major milestone will get easier to accomplish as your child grows and becomes older. It will be difficult at first but it makes every experience extra special and worth the wait.
You cannot compare the progress, size, growth, or development of your child to a child that was born full term. If you have this mindset then you will become discouraged. Enjoy your time at each developmental stage because before you know it they will be 3 and speaking in full sentences.
Lastly, the staff at Akron Children’s was so caring, kind, encouraging, and supportive especially during the scariest times in the NICU. We fully trust the doctors and nurses because they helped our twins overcome every obstacle and become who they are today. Also, we are so blessed by God who has had his hand on them from the moment they were formed in the womb. We are reminded daily of God’s grace and ability to perform miracles every moment we see Spencer and Sawyer’s precious faces. Thank you for this opportunity to let us share our journey with Spencer and Sawyer.
