Helping Haiti: ‘We’ve done really some good work’

Dr. Ellen Kempf examines 2-year-old Nyderson Deris, who was brought to Akron Children's from Haiti for surgery to repair his heart defect.

Since making his first trip to Haiti in 2010, following that country’s devastating earthquake, Dr. Jeff Kempf has been humbled by the progress made by his Akron Children’s Hospital team and a larger coalition that now includes five other U.S. children’s hospitals.

A recap of Akron Children’s Global Health Conference

In 2010, Akron Children's Hospital entered into an affiliation agreement with St. Damien Hospital, which is located in Port-au-Prince and is the only pediatric hospital in Haiti. In addition to the donation of supplies, the affiliation will focus on training.

More than 120 people attended the first Global Health Conference, hosted by Akron Children’s Hospital. The conference focused on the children of Haiti, with workshops covering public policy, case presentations, and personal stories from doctors and nurses who’ve provided care in Haiti.

Thanks to Akron Children’s and other benefactors, the boys – 17-month-old Kurtis Petion and 4-year-old Elie Pierre – were able to travel to Akron for their surgeries.

Our nurses here, along with nurse practitioner Ann Ryan and former Akron pediatric resident Rachel, taught PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life [...]
