It was sweet of Akron Beacon Journal food writer Lisa Abraham to bring representatives from Peeps & Company to visit our patient families in Akron today. These marshmallow confections have been bringing smiles to both kids and kids at heart since the 1940s, and sure enough, the Peeps produced plenty of grins at Akron Children’s as well.
I waited with a crowd of patients and staff members for the Peepster mobile to arrive. Peeps representatives Raymond Hayduk and Paul Gustafson drove Lisa up to the Grand Revolver in the bright yellow VW Bug, fashioned with a giant Peep on the roof. After they shared their delicious booty with the crowd, I escorted Lisa, Paul and Ray to the patient units, where they passed out Mike and Ike candies, traditional Peeps and Peepsters, a new line of miniature Peeps covered in chocolate. (The little Peepsters are my personal favorite, reminding me of a yummy S’mores snack.) The patients were happy to get the colorful tote bags and adorable notebooks proclaiming “Give Peeps a Chance.”
Thanks to Peeps & Company, it really felt like spring despite the snow and cold! Days like today really make my job fun and meaningful.
