It was an atypical Saturday at Akron Children’s Hospital as numerous Little People filtered into the Considine Professional Building for our first medical symposium, in conjunction with the NorthCoast Chapter Little People of America (LPA) Spring Regional. What made this regional so different from others was its similarity to the annual National LPA Conference. Usually regional meetings do not give LPA members access to world renowned physicians who specialize in dwarfing disorders.
How blessed we are as an organization to have these specialists, who are willing to sacrifice their weekend for us. They volunteered their time and expertise to see people on an individual basis and present workshops regarding medical issues pertinent to the health and well-being of those of us who have dwarfism.
We desperately seek doctors and healthcare providers who are well-versed in the more than 200 different types of dwarfing disorders. We truly appreciate the time of the medical specialists from Akron Children’s, as well as A.I DuPont Hospital for Children, the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and the University of Indiana.
LPA members continue to rave about the exceptional knowledge they have gained during their time at Akron Children’s. A special thanks to Drs. Richard Pauli and Dennis Weiner as well as registered nurse Bonnie Leighley for their support of the event.
In addition, I am very grateful for the sponsorship of Akron Children’s Hospital. Without your backing, the symposium would not have been possible.
