Nearly 1,000 people and dogs braved the heat Sunday to participate in Akron Children’s Kids Are Number One Run. All you had to do was look around to see why the Kids Run is such a beloved event. It offers a perfect combination of happy patients, devoted employees and diligent volunteers (and their dogs).
Now in its 26th year, we’ve fine-tuned this event into a family favorite. It originally began as a fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House of Akron. Our cleft palate support group and ACBC burn camp were the official beneficiaries of this year’s Kids Run.
Unofficially, we all benefit from events like this. The Kids Run is a tangible expression of our culture at Akron Children’s: Treating all children as we treat our own. To that end, many of our employees’ children attended, including mine. Lots of activities catered to the kids, including hair and face painting and displays from the Akron Zoo and a miniature train group. And parents seemed glad to have the educational information we offered.
One of the most heartwarming sights was seeing our inpatients come out to enjoy the day. On this day, it is less of a bummer to spend the weekend in the hospital. All the fun is right in our front yard, making fun accessible to everyone but the sickest of kids.
So many attendees are – or have been – patients at Akron Children’s. And the Kids Run is a brilliant way to make this one day free of sticks and procedures. It is just a fun day to hang out with the people who care for you. It was a great sight to see.
