Every summer, Akron Children’s Hospital puts on an event called “Take me Out to the Ballgame” – a carnival and picnic inside and outside of the Considine Professional Building for patients with cerebral palsy and their families. The outing is tomorrow and will be followed by an Akron Aeros ballgame.
Everyday my daughter Alexis faces obstacles. She has cerebral palsy. Alexis is confined to a wheelchair, but her smile lights up any room. She has had more surgeries than birthdays, but Alexis is blessed to have the best hospital available to her locally. She gets the best care at Akron Children’s Hospital.
The doctors are caring, compassionate and treat Alexis as if she were one of their own children. When we walk through the hallways of the hospital, the staff are all very friendly and everyone, including the doctors say “Hello” to us and all the families that visit.
We wouldn’t miss “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” For Alexis, it is a day full of fun without any obstacles. She gets a full day of fun just being a kid.
She gets the opportunity to dunk her favorite doctor in a dunk tank. She gets to play many accessible games and win prizes. She gets to see exotic animals and other friendly animals.
Most of all, Alexis gets a day when everything is about her and for her.
A day like that never happens for kids like Alexis. We think that Akron Children’s makes dreams come true.
