Polly Sheban was looking “to fill that little gap” she experienced after retiring from a local doctor’s office the previous year. She read about volunteer opportunities at Akron Children’s Beeghly campus in her local newspaper and thought she’d sign up for an interview.
She was looking for volunteer work that “was both exciting and gratifying.”
After raising five sons, Polly knew that being with young children would be a natural evolvement for her. She completed volunteer training and then became an official Akron Children’s Hospital volunteer.
That was 2 ½ years ago. Today, Polly helps out by doing a little bit of everything.
“I deliver mail, distribute toys and books, sort blankets and other items that have been donated and anything else that needs done in the volunteer office,” said Polly.
Her favorite task is delivering mail.
“It gives me the opportunity to go to different departments and become familiar with the staff,” she said. “Working with Sue, our volunteer director, and the other wonderful women I volunteer with on Tuesdays has been a rewarding and fun experience.”
