The Akron Zoo will host the 6th annual Walk for Babies fundraiser this Sunday.
Walk for Babies was created by Sam and Shelby Snellenberger who wanted to give back to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) staff at Akron Children’s after they cared for their daughter, Amelia.
A full-term baby with no prior health concerns, Amelia’s organs began to shut down shortly after being born. She was rushed to the NICU where Sam and Shelby spent 25 days waiting for a positive outcome.
Amelia is now 5-years-old, and her parents attribute Amelia’s health and wellness to the hard work and efforts of the NICU staff.
As a way of showing their gratitude, the Snellenbergers created the Walk for Babies in 2007 to raise funds in support of the NICU. It is a non-competitive, one-mile walk around the Akron Zoo.
Last year, the event had more than 800 people gather and 98 teams participate.
When the Snellenberger’s first began the event their goal was to raise $100,000. In 5 years, they’ve raised more than $300,000.
Registration begins at 8 a.m., and the walk starts at 9 a.m. To donate, please visit the Walk for Babies website.
