With the NICU reunion approaching, our family is becoming more and more excited to see all the familiar faces that helped save our babies lives.
Our precious little boys Ean and Evan were born 3 months early at 27 weeks in August of 2011. Weighing in at 1 lb 15 oz and 2 lbs 6 oz ,our tiny frail little boys were very sick and spent nearly 3 months in the NICU at Akron Children’s Hospital. They went through many ups and downs during their NICU stay but were able to come home after 72 days.
The whole NICU experience is something I do not think my family and I can ever forget. I spent every day at their bedside watching them fight for their lives not knowing what to expect day to day.
As scary as the NICU experience was, it was also quite an amazing journey. Getting to watch the boys meet little milestones like how to breathe on their own without a vent or extra help from a cannula to taking that first bottle and seeing them for the first time without any wires or breathing tubes are memories I will forever cherish in my heart.
At birth the boys were only given a 30 percent survival rate and we were unsure what the future would be like for them. As of today we spend our days running after two very energetic little boys who have learned to crawl and are in the process of “cruising furniture.”
I thank God every day for giving me these two little miracle babies who have brought so much happiness to our lives. But I also thank Akron Children’s NICU and their staff for taking such good care of our babies.
The boys are ready for their first NICU reunion, and we cannot wait to show all the staff and doctors who followed our sons how much they have grown in the last year.
See you all in October!
Love the Fertig/White family
