In response to the increased need for physical activity and healthy eating programs for our nation’s youth, Akron Children’s Hospital has partnered with the Kohl’s to address this growing challenge. Akron Children’s received $302, 178 from Kohl’s Cares® for the hospital’s Future Fitness Clubs during a check presentation held in conjunction with the Akron Marathon Kids’ Run on Sept. 29.
The Kohl’s Future Fitness Clubs focus on obesity prevention, treatment and healthy eating for children in northeast Ohio. Participants learn healthy eating and fitness habits as they participate in games and other fun, non-competitive activities, such as obstacle courses, relay races, circuit strength/flexibility training and more. The program recently expanded to three sites in the Mahoning Valley.
“Future Fitness Club sites have increased by 50 percent during the last three years,” says Amy Chand, youth fitness specialist/exercise physiologist at Akron Children’s Sports Medicine Center. “We now serve Summit, Stark, Medina, Mahoning and Wayne counties with hopes to expand into Portage and Cuyahoga counties in the near future.”
Since 2000, Kohl’s has donated more than $3.3 million to Akron Children’s Hospital for the Kohl’s Future Fitness Clubs and other programs through their Kohl’s Cares® cause merchandise program. To learn more, click here.
