A well known saying goes, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but I bet you have never heard, “a book a day keeps the mind from turning grey.”
Well, ok, I made up that last one but there is truth in it, especially for children.
As a parent or caregiver you are your child’s first and sometimes only teacher for his first 5 years of life. Are you prepared?
Don’t worry if you’re not. There’s a simple step you can take to advance your child to greatness. Read.
It’s never too early to begin introducing your children to books. Let them hold the book, look at the pictures, and practice page turning. It has been proven that children who are read to achieve higher receptive vocabulary scores than those who are not.
When being read to 3 to 5 times a week, children ages 4 to 5 read at the same level as children 6 months older. Reading to a child 6 to 7 times a week boosts their literacy level a year ahead of those not being read to.
This developmental growth follows children through their life and introduces vocabulary that they wouldn’t otherwise hear spoken by a parent or caregiver.
Reading is a critical component to giving your child an advantage in life. Introduce your children to the library, get them their own library card, pick out a handful of books, read to them, and advance your child to greatness!
