Being in the hospital during the holidays can be challenging for the children we serve and their families. It’s difficult to imagine how one’s excitement during a birth can quickly lead to fear.
Parents have dreams of bringing home their babies shortly after birth, and for many reasons, that dream doesn’t come to fruition for the families we serve. It is the role of the medical team to lead our families through this difficult time while enhancing their quality of life.
At Akron Children’s, we work diligently to ensure the best care is given by each department. We strive to remain cognizant of how we can meet the needs of our patients and families during such a difficult time.
Working as a team is what led Andrea Landis, a pediatric nurse at Akron Children’s Hospital, to talk to me about a special opportunity for the families we serve in the special care nursery on the Beeghly campus.
I was making my daily rounds in the special care nursery when I noticed Andrea assisting a new mom taking holiday pictures for their Christmas card. Andrea mentioned to me, “A real photographer would be helpful for these families and I think a real photographer would be a wonderful representation of our family-centered care.”
I talked with Andrea about this vision and after that a Christmas Photo Session was born.
On Dec. 17, Tiffany Swift from our Audio/Visual department arrived at Akron Children’s NICU located at St. Elizabeth in Youngstown to facilitate pictures of the patients’ with their families.
Shortly after, Tiffany arrived at our Beeghly campus to take pictures of each newborn with their parents.
The event was a success and the patients whose parents were not able to attend were provided a holiday picture of their child. The families we assisted were overwhelmed with the gesture and a token of the Christmas spirit from the hospital.
I think teamwork like ours is what sets us apart from other organizations.
It is an honor and privilege to serve the patients’ and their families with each team member at this organization. Every employee has an understanding and commitment to the core values that has made the hospital what it is today.
Working together for the greater good of our patients and their families is what this organization has been built on. I am proud to be a member of such a special organization….I know my co-workers are too.
