Local businesses, such as Buehler’s Food Market in Portage Lakes, are signing up to be Change Bandits to raise money for the Have a Heart, Do Your Part radiothon, which airs Feb. 13-15 on 98.1 WKDD.
Buehler’s Food Market at 4045 S. Main St. in Akron has always been community-minded.
“Last year, I worked at the Wooster store,” said Jim Fox, Portage Lakes Buehler’s Food Market store manager. “I heard about Akron Children’s Hospital’s radiothon years ago, and I’ve always wanted to get involved.”
When Fox came to the Portage Lakes Buehler’s location, an employee, Donna, reached out to him about the Have a Heart, Do Your Part radiothon.
“She told me that this store (formerly IGA), had been a Change Bandit before, and sold paper hearts to support radiothon,” said Fox. “The employees wanted to do it again, and I was very excited about the idea.”
Fox has a personal connection to Akron Children’s Hospital, and he sees radiothon as a way to give back.
“Akron Children’s Hospital treated my daughter for a blood disorder when she was younger,” said Fox. “She is now 19 years old, and this is a way for me to say thank you for how well they took care of my daughter.”
The Buehler’s Food Market in Portage Lakes is selling paper hearts for $1 to support the radiothon. To date, they have sold more than 300.
Also, this year, 8 Buehler’s employees will be volunteering to answer phones and take pledges during radiothon.
“We are all very excited,” said Fox. “And I am so proud of my employees. I didn’t have to ask and my staff wanted to help support the radiothon in any way.”
