Each June, our patients in the Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders enjoy special visits from celebrities in town participating in the LOPen Charity Events, which include a golf outing and concert.
This year was no different, as our patients enjoyed everything from superheroes to makeovers and sing-alongs from our special guests.
On June 17, Logan, otherwise known as “Batman” by his nurses and doctors, got a superhero of a surprise when Batman visited him, along with many others, at Akron Children’s.

Jackie and Luke pose with Batman.
“Batman is relatable to these kids,” said the superhero. “Anyone can be Batman because he’s a very real character. He went through hard times, just like these kids, but he fought and came out stronger, giving back to those who are still fighting.”
Other notable visitors also stopped by throughout the week. M.C. Hair consultants came in to do hair and nails for the patients.
Teen patient Jackie Custer made the brave decision to cut off 10 inches of her hair to donate to Locks of Love. It was an emotional moment for Jackie and her parents, but knowing that she would soon lose her hair, she wanted to find a way to give back while she still could.
Singer Ryan Cabrera and Chefs Lou and Roshni from the TV show Hell’s Kitchen visited with the kids, singing songs and making ice cream sundaes.

Chef Lou and Chef Roshni visited with Caleb, delivering a cherry-topped sundae.
As the week leading up to the LOPen came to a close, country music group Brother Trouble, actor and singer Thomas Ian Nicholas and WWE superstars Lillian Garcia and Ted DiBiasi Jr. visited with the patients.

Brother Trouble, a country music duo, delighted patients throughout the hospital with their music.
The LOPen Golf Outing has raised more than $400,000 for the pediatric cancer and blood disorders programs at Akron Children’s since it began 12 years ago.
