Aug. 17 marked the Mahoning Valley’s 3rd Annual Kid’s Hematology/Oncology Awareness Celebration, which took place with the Scrappers at Eastwood Field in Niles. The event kicked off National Childhood Cancer and Sickle Cell Awareness Month, which is right around the corner, starting in September.
More than 15 patient families participated and received tickets to the game and vouchers for food at the stadium. Before the start of the game, the families walked onto the field and lined up on the first base to participate in a balloon send off. Then, Madison Zets, an 11 year old from Canfield, threw the first pitch.
It was wonderful to see these children and families together. All of their lives have been touched in some way by childhood cancer, sickle cell, hematology diagnosis, or a bleeding disorder. And to top off this special night, the Scrappers won.
To recognize National Childhood Cancer and Sickle Cell Awareness Month, Akron Children’s Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders will celebrate a different theme each week: movie week, beach week, sports week, and animal week. We invite our families to stop in and join in the fun.
