Press releases, speeches and twitter feeds are just a few of the ways Stephanie York, director of communications for the City of Akron, stays on the pulse of things happening in the city. But, on Oct. 24, she’ll be stepping to her own beat as she takes to the stage at Akron Civic Theatre as part of Akron Children’s Hospital’s 3rd annual “Dancing for the Kids” event.
“I agreed to participate because I could not say no to this fun event that is all about the kids,” said York. “….Akron Children’s Hospital is one of the city’s jewels, and I am happy to do anything I can to help support their mission.”
On a daily basis you can find York working closely with Akron’s mayor to make sure he knows what topics are “hot” and that he is prepared for upcoming events. As if managing communications for the city isn’t enough to keep her busy, she’s also assistant director of law for the City of Akron. In this role, she’s responsible for reviewing legal claims made to the city and giving legal advice to administration.
Keeping pace is something York not only does at work, but also at home. Her husband, John, and three children – Sam, Audrey, and Ellie – are constantly on the move. “Our kids are active in a number of different sports and other outside activities while my husband and I are on – a collective – seven boards,” said York. “Our lives are super hectic and crazy, but fun.”
As one of nine celebrity dancers at this year’s event, York is taking her dance rehearsals seriously and keeping her expectations realistic. “[My instructor] would say I am a fast learner, but I think she would agree that I am not graceful,” said York. “I hope to raise money for the children and escape without injury!”
The community is encouraged to support the event by voting for their favorite dancer online through donations or attending the event. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children. All proceeds from the event will go to support Akron Children’s Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders.
