As co-anchor for Fox 8 News in the Morning, Kristi Capel has more charisma than most at 4:30 a.m., and she’s hoping to bring that same charisma to the dance floor as she participates in Akron Children’s Hospitals’ 3rd annual “Dancing for the Kids” event Oct. 24 at the Akron Civic Theatre.
“This is such an amazing event because it helps raise money to help kids with cancer… at Akron’s Children’s Hospital,” said Capel. “These sweet kids deserve the very best and the little bit we can do from this event makes me so proud to be a part of it.”
It takes hard work and dedication to be an anchor on morning television, but that’s part of Capel’s character. “My alarm goes off at 2 a.m.; the show starts at 4:30 a.m. and it’s a marathon ending at 10 a.m.,” explained Capel.
It’s this level of energy that she brings to all facets of her life that has served her well throughout the years. Capel received a volleyball scholarship to Evangel University in Missouri where she graduated and then went on to win the title of Miss Missouri USA 2006. Additionally, she was awarded “The Times Leader’s 40 Under Forty” for successful individuals who have excelled in their professions and communities in Northeast and Central PA.
When Capel isn’t busy preparing for the morning show or giving back to the community, she stays busy at home with her husband and daughter Kyndal. Although she grew up in Northern Kentucky, her father grew up in Bedford, which may explain her passion for local teams. “My husband and I are huge Cleveland sports fans,” added Capel.
As for dancing, Capel has some experience to draw from, “I was a cheerleader through high school and a ballet and tap dancer as a little girl,” said Capel. “I think my instructor has been impressed with how fast I’ve picked up the steps at our first practices, but now I have to remember the dance…that’s the challenging part!”
As one of nine celebrity dancers at this years’ event, Capel is hoping to put her best foot forward to help raise awareness and money for Akron Children’s Showers Family Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders.
The community is encouraged to support the event by voting for their favorite dancer online through donations or attending the event. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children.
