In 2014, we shared countless stories from Akron Children’s Hospital on Facebook, from fundraisers to visits to Haiti. 10. Transplanting a pediatric cardiology program to Haiti
For the past 2 years, children have been leaving Haiti – 2 at a time a few times a year – to come to Akron Children’s to have their heart defects repaired. But for each of these life-saving procedures we’ve performed, there are hundreds of children back in Haiti waiting for their turn. That’s why our doctors and clinicians have been helping St. Damien’s Pediatric Hospital develop a plan to launch its own pediatric cardiology program in Port-au-Prince.
9. Ava’s last leukemia treatment
Two years after being diagnosed with leukemia, 6-year-old Ava celebrated her last chemotherapy treatment.
8. Noah’s story – From NICU to now
During her 18th week of pregnancy, Noah’s mom was already 6 cm dilated. But after complete bed rest and having her cervix sewn shut twice, Noah had a fighting chance. He was born 10 weeks shy of full-term at 3 lbs., 2 oz. He was a fighter, and 2 years later, he’s doing amazingly well.
7. Halloween fun

6. Holiday Tree Festival
The Holiday Tree Festival has been a treasured gift to the community from the volunteers of Akron Children’s since 1982. The opening gala of the 2014 Holiday Tree Festival attracted more than 850 attendees, and photos of the event were favorites among our social community. Over its 33 years, the festival has raised more than $4.7 million for the hospital.
5. Cuddling with preemies in the NICU
A select group of special volunteers has been handpicked to cuddle and comfort fragile newborns in our neonatal intensive care unit when their parents are unavailable.
4. Dreamnight at the Zoo
The annual Dreamnight at the Zoo is a favorite among our patient families.The 2014 event was hosted in June and photos from the event were very popular among our Facebook followers.
3. WKYC’s Dorothy and the Lion visit Akron Children’s
WKYC morning anchors John Anderson and Hollie Strano made good on their March Madness bracket bet and visited Akron Children’s with more than 1,000 books for our Reach Out and Read program. Dressed as Dorothy and the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz, they read stories and visited with children at the hospital. The books were donated by Empowering Punch fitness studio.
2. “Have a Heart, Do Your Part” radiothon
The 15th annual “Have a Heart, Do Your Part” radiothon was hosted in February on 98.1 WKDD. During the 3-day event, we were able to raise more than $633,000 to benefit our patients. We also set up a photo booth in our lobby, which was a hit with our generous supporters and patients.
1. Change Bandit Bash
The Change Bandit Bash rallied together our change bandits and helped us kick off the “Have a Heart, Do Your Part” radiothon. We raised more than $47,000 from the bash alone. We are so grateful to the countless patient families and volunteers who help us support our patients.
