A few months ago, my cousin told me about a unique, family-friendly fundraiser for Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley called the American Girl Fashion Show.
My daughters, 7-year-old Gabby and 6-year-old Lauren, love their American Girl dolls, and they are not by any means shy. So when I asked them if they wanted to go on stage, wear pretty clothes and help kids in our community who are sick, the answer was a resounding “YES!”
I can’t begin to describe how excited we are to be a part of the show. It’s the first time my family will go to the annual fundraiser, let alone participate in it.
Gabby and Lauren can’t wait to get dressed up with their dolls and walk the runway. I’m thrilled that my girls are learning at an early age that it’s important to help others.
We love Akron Children’s. As a mom, I can breathe a little easier knowing there’s such a wonderful place right in our own community. We’ve been there several times with both our girls, and we’ve experienced firsthand just how special it is.
Everything is geared toward the kids. The staff is sweet, accommodating and, most importantly, understands them.
For instance, when Lauren had to have blood drawn, they did it in such a way that was virtually pain- and worry-free. It may seem like a small thing to some, but as a mom, it made a world of difference. Instead of having a scared toddler who had to be poked multiple times, I had a little girl who was calm and smiling at her physicians.
It’s for many reasons like this and more that we can’t wait to get involved and give back to the hospital through the American Girl Fashion Show. My parents raised me to help others. Now, I’m excited to pass this on to my daughters.
