¿Hablas español? Fortunately, for Spanish-speaking patients at Akron Children’s Hospital, our new hospitalist Denise Lopez Domowicz can.
Having moved to the U.S. with her family when she was young, Dr. Lopez Domowicz knows first-hand the importance of being understood when seeking medical attention.
She not only talks the talk – in English and Spanish – but also walks the walk as a doctor helping patients and their families get the care they need right here at Akron Children’s.
Current residence: Cleveland
Favorite childhood toy: My Little Pony and Strawberry Shortcake. I also had a Tigger with a spring-like tail that I loved.
Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Being able to eat whatever I want…running around without a care…and summer break!
Favorite movie and book of all time: Hands down, The Little Mermaid is the best movie ever and The Little Prince is my favorite book.
Favorite food: I like everything! It really depends on the mood I’m in. I love Thai Curries, but if it’s comfort food that I need then it’s milanesa con pure (fried, breaded beef steak with mash potatoes).
Favorite music: I like rock-n-roll with a bit of a chill like Dispatch, O.A.R. and Red Wanting Blue.
First concert: 311 with Jay Z
What was your first paying job? In college, I worked as a secretary as part of a work-study program and then as a lab tech.
What’s your quote to live by? “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” – Gandhi
Something people may not know about you: I sing. I sang the National Anthem at high school basketball games growing up. My dream has always been to sing the Anthem at a Duke (my alma mater) basketball game. I also play the guitar.
Who do you most admire and why? My dad because he’s worked so hard to provide for our family. He’s shown me and my brother how hard work pays off and what can be accomplished through it.
If you could invite anyone to dinner, who would it be and why? I’d invite Jesus to see what he’s like for myself. People have been interpreting him and his work for centuries so I’d like to better understand it directly from him.
What couldn’t you live without: My friends and my mom. My support network.
How do you give back? Last year I went to Belize on a medical mission trip. I’ve done other mission trips to the Dominican Republic and Ecuador, which I’ve really enjoyed.
Why did you choose to come to Akron Children’s? The people are super supportive and welcoming. Everyone is friendly all the time. The residents are really fantastic here, too. They’re spot-on. Children’s is a perfect fit for me and my career.
