Whether it’s dancing, hiking or snow skiing, Dr. Lauren Bouton is not one to sit idle.
Growing up, backyard adventures fueled her zest for life, but today it’s her passion for caring that’s brought her to our backyard as a general pediatrician and hospitalist at Akron Children’s Beeghly campus.
Grew up in: Lafayette, Calif.
Family: Married to husband, Daniel, and with daughter, Riley
Favorite childhood toy: I played dress-up all the time. My mom and grandpa used to buy me big gowns and dresses. I would dance and perform in front of anyone who would watch me.
Name 1 thing you miss about being a kid: I loved playing in the woods in our backyard and floating down the creek with my brother and sister. I’d always have some new place I’d want to explore or game I’d want to play. They used to call me Adventure Lauren. We’d find frogs, turtles, bugs, you name it, and then we’d bring them home to our parents.
What did you want to be when you were little? I wanted to be a dancer or a singer but, unfortunately, lacked all the talent.
Favorite movie and book of all time: The movie has to be Grease and favorite book is Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingslover.
Favorite food: I love tamales!
Favorite music: Disney Princess Lullabies and The Beatles Lullabies. My daughter is 7 months old so whatever helps her sleep I’m into.
First concert: I’m not sure. It was either Gloria Estefan with my dad or Peter Paul and Mary with both of my parents.
What was your first paying job? Edwards Luggage Store. I know a lot about suitcases.
What’s your quote to live by? Attitude is everything has been a motto of mine since high school. The other quote I love is “… I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these 3 things: a rainy day, lost luggage and tangled Christmas tree lights…” ― Maya Angelou
If you could invite anyone to dinner, who would it be? My mom’s mom. My middle name, Katharine, is in remembrance of her. She passed away when my mom was 17. Now that I’m a mom, I’d love to talk with her about what it was like raising my mom.
What couldn’t you live without? Besides my husband and daughter, I couldn’t live without dancing. I’m not good at it but I love it…and it relieves stress.
Hidden talents: I love to paint. I’d really like to take a formal watercolor class someday.
Ideal day: Waking up and going for a walk on the beach with my family and then spending the day hiking to a lake or waterfall. In the evening, I’d like to sit outside and have a BBQ dinner with family.
Something you’ve always wanted to do: I want to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in the Andes Mountains of Peru.
Traits you value in a colleague: I value someone who is amiable, compassionate, collaborative and patient.
Special hobby or interest: I enjoy doing almost anything outside – hiking, biking, downhill skiing, kayaking.
Why did you choose to come to Akron Children’s? I’m captivated by the promise of Children’s. Everyone truly carries out the promise in their work. It seems so basic – treat others as you’d want to be treated – but people often forget. I think making a promise to patients speaks volumes about the institution.
