Wild, wonderful is the motto of West Virginia and for Akron Children’s Hospital’s new sports medicine physician, Derrick Eddy, he really takes it to heart. When the West Virginia native isn’t caring for children, teens and adults with sports or activity-related injuries, you’re likely to find Dr. Eddy enjoying the wild outdoors or cooking up something wonderful in his kitchen.
Where did you grow up? St. Marys, WV
Family: Wife, Kathy, kids Nate and Jenna and our Beagle, Snuggles.
Favorite childhood toy or activity: Camping with my family in North Bend Park, WV.
What’s the 1 thing you miss most about being a kid? Having no real responsibility.
What did you want to be when you were little? By age 4 I knew I wanted to be a doctor.
Favorite TV show, book and movie: I enjoy watching anything on the outdoor channel and reading Vince Flynn and Brad Thor novels. My favorite movies are the Naked Gun series or any Mel Brooks movie. He’s such a funny guy.
Favorite food: Probably Chinese. I especially like Panda orange chicken.
Favorite type of music: I like Christian heavy metal, hard rock music. Project 86 or Devil Wears Prada are tied for my favorite band.
First concert: Young MC. I saw him at a concert in Marietta, Ohio.
Do you follow a sports team? Anything West Virginia, but I probably enjoy WVU (West Virginia University) football and basketball the most.
Have you ever met someone famous? Alton Brown the chef. I’m a foody so I went to a food convention he was attending. I got my picture with him and a signed copy of his first cookbook.
What was your first paying job? Mowing grass and then I worked for my dad’s company in a plant doing odds-and-ends-type jobs. It really solidified, in my mind, that I was going to be a doctor.
Do you have a quote/mantra you live by? And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
Who do you admire most and why? Jesus because He gave everything for me.
If you could invite anyone to dinner, who would it be and why? The Mount Rushmore presidents. I admire all the positive changes they made for our country. I would like to hear about their thought processes as they were going through the difficult times during their presidencies.
What couldn’t you live without? Chocolate – any type of dark chocolate, specifically.
What’s your idea of happiness? Being outdoors. I love hiking, biking, kayaking, hunting, fishing and camping with my family.
Something you’ve always wanted to do and still want to do? Travel to France, Italy and Hawaii. I’d also like to travel to states in Northwestern U.S. to do some hunting for moose, caribou, elk and bears.
Most cherished possession? A precision rifle that I built myself.
Do you have a hobby or special interest? Besides hunting, I enjoy cooking and trying new foods.
What is your greatest indulgence? I’m a foody so when I go on vacation I always try to find famous places to eat, especially if there’s a Food Network chef restaurant nearby. I’m in.
What’s your greatest achievement? Taking a position here at Akron Children’s. The hospital has one of the best pediatric sports medicine departments in the country. I love Akron and this opportunity.
