I’ll be there for you is not only the theme song to Dr. Lauren Ousley’s favorite TV show, Friends, but also a theme that echoes through the Emergency Department at Akron Children’s where she works. As one of the department’s new physicians, Dr. Ousley splits her time between the Emergency and Sedation Services Department to care for infants, children and teens when they need it most.
Where did you grow up? Marshall, MI
Family: I’m married to my husband, Paul, and have an English bulldog named Brutus.
What’s the 1 thing you miss most about being a kid? Being carefree with a complete lack of responsibility.
Favorite childhood toy? My Teddy Ruxpin doll.
What’s your favorite TV show? My all-time favorite TV show is Friends.
Favorite food? Anything Mexican.
First concert: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I went with my sister and her college friends when I was 12 or 13.
Do you follow a sports team? I’ve always been a fan of the Cleveland Indians. I was born and raised in Michigan, but both my parents grew up on the west side of Cleveland so they raised me to be loyal to all things Cleveland, including the Buckeyes. My husband and I love the Detroit Red Wings, as well.
Have you ever met anyone famous? When I was younger I was obsessed with Andy Roddick (an American former professional tennis player). I played tennis throughout high school and in college. When I was in high school, I saw him play in a professional tournament in Indianapolis. I brought along a pillow I had made with his face ironed onto it and he autograph it for me.
What was your first paying job? I worked at a local Five and Dime general store in high school.
Who do you admire most and why? My parents who’ve been married for 46 years. Their relationship is a true inspiration and sets a great example for my husband and me.
What couldn’t you live without? My family, husband and dog…and air conditioning and dry shampoo.
If you could invite anyone to dinner, who would it be and why? My grandparents who passed away before I got a chance to meet them.
What’s something people may not know about you? I used to be really into couponing back when I had more free time. Even now I rarely pay full-price for things when I shop.
What’s your idea of a perfect day? I enjoy spending free time with family and friends, the people who mean the most to me.
What’s your most treasured possession? A Kenny Lofton autographed baseball that I got during his time with the Indians in the 1990s. I was also lucky enough to attend Game 1 of the World Series this past year where Kenny threw out the first pitch. It was an awesome experience.
Something you’ve always wanted to do and still want to do? I’d like to travel more, especially internationally to Europe and Australia. Both of my parents are 2nd generation Czechoslovakians, so it would be neat to explore my roots back in the old country.
What is your greatest indulgence? Chocolate and watching Dancing with the Stars.
What’s your greatest achievement? I’m proud of my relationship with my husband and the recent changes I’ve made toward a healthier lifestyle.
Do you have a pet peeve? I don’t like clutter or slow drivers.
Why did you choose Akron Children’s? During my rotations as a medical student and during residency I got to work with a lot of wonderful people, some who became my mentors and others my best friends. I really fell in love with the people and the community here.
