Abigail and Rebecca Geiser are like most other 16-year-old girls, excited to get their driver’s licenses soon and making their way through high school. But the way they celebrated their 16th birthday was extraordinary.
“I thought they’d want a big party when they turned 16, but as it got closer and closer they begged me not to. They told me they didn’t want to be the center of attention,” said their mom, Amy.
Instead Abigail and Rebecca took a group of their friends to Barnes & Noble and went shopping for children’s books to donate to Akron Children’s Hospital.
“We picked out our favorite books from when we were kids and our friends picked out their favorites, too,” Rebecca said.
They made sure to pick out some teen books for older patients and some adult books for the burn unit, too. By the end of their bookstore party, they had over 100 books to donate to Akron Children’s. And once word spread about their book donation, more books came in from friends and teachers. When they arrived to Akron Children’s to drop off their donation, it totaled 145 books and a couple teddy bears, too.
If you’d like to donate books or toys for Akron Children’s patients, you can take a look at our patient wish lists and call the Volunteer Services office at 330-543-8424 with any questions or to schedule your donation drop-off.
