Dr. Vida Kaniecki enjoys the mostly highs and lows of raising a big, blended family — a fiancé, 6 kids combined (ages 19 to 25), plus 2 rescue dogs. Her “Brady Bunch” is her most treasured possession and greatest achievement.
So when Dr. Kaniecki joined Akron Children’s family as our newest pediatrician at Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics, Boardman, she was thrilled to expand her crew. Whether at home or the office, she cherishes helping kids navigate through childhood — from an infant’s bright eyes to a preschooler’s hilarious response to a teen’s plans for the future — and all the growth, development and conditions that come along with that journey.
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
I would stay here. My fiancé and I just completed building our “dream house” and since you spend most of your time at home, no matter how often you vacation, you want your home to be where you want to be. I like the 4 seasons, and it’s never too hot or cold (usually) in this region. Plus, there’s so much to do around here.
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 3 items would you bring with you and why?
I would take sunscreen. I am actually allergic to the sun (I just found out recently) and will break out in hives if I don’t use sunscreen. I would also take my Kindle and internet service so I could read (not surf the Internet), which is one of my favorite pastimes.
What did you eat for breakfast?
I usually have a bagel with peanut butter for breakfast when I work since it’s easily portable. When I’m home, I love a leisurely breakfast with avocado toast and tea with honey.
When you curl up on the couch to watch a movie, are you most likely to have a bowl of popcorn, chocolate or box of tissues?
I rarely curl up on the couch to watch a movie since I usually fall asleep shortly after it begins. But if I did, I would have buttered popcorn, followed by chocolate. Who doesn’t like sweet and savory together?
Do you dunk your Oreos in milk, lick off the icing, eat them as they are or avoid them altogether?
Oreos in milk is good, but I also like them crunchy, chased down with milk!
Who makes up your family, including pets and their names?
My immediate family is made up of my fiancé, Roy, our 6 (combined) children ranging in age from 19 to 25: Tim, David, Greg, Alec, Eiley and Diana. We also have 2 dogs, which are also siblings/littermates, Georgia and Koda. They are little fur balls — supposedly miniature Austrian Shepherd, spaniel, Chihuahua mixes — that we rescued from the local shelter when they were 6 months old.
What’s your most treasured possession?
My family. Everything else is just material items and can be replaced. Family and friends cannot.
What’s your favorite food? Who makes it best?
I don’t actually have a favorite food because I like all kinds of food, and I like to try new things. If you asked my kids, they would say I like fish tacos since I always order them when eating out in different places. I’m a pretty good cook, and I like to make new things, but there is not always time.
Something you’ve always wanted to do and still want to do it?
I’ve always wanted to grow a large garden and make all fresh foods. When I have time, I’d like to have a greenhouse and grow not only vegetables, but also plants. Being surrounded by living things creates a calming/soothing environment.
What is your greatest achievement?
My greatest achievement is raising my children to be good, kind and responsible young adults.
