Thrill seeking is one of the things Dr. Andrea Sims enjoys most in life. She’s been lava chasing on Mount Etna, Europe’s highest and most active volcano. She’s skydived multiple times and even paraglided off the cliffs of Taormina, Italy.
But these adrenaline activities just don’t compare to the rush Dr. Sims gets when treating infants, kids and teens with minor to acute medical conditions as our newest pediatrician at Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics, Fairlawn. After losing several close family members and friends to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, motor vehicle accidents and violence, she vowed early on to help and advocate for kids. It’s this thrill-seeking adventure that she’s most proud of accomplishing.
Which emoji do you use the most?
My most-used emoji would have to be the laughing face with tears coming out of its eyes. I’m a pretty easygoing person that likes to laugh and have a good time with family and friends.
Why did you want to become a doctor?
I’ve known ever since 3rd grade that I wanted to be a “doctor for the kids.” I lost a cousin to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and couldn’t understand why there was no answer to his passing away at such a young age. That’s when I vowed “to help ALL kids when I was older.”
My passion was fueled in my teenage years with the loss of friends to chickenpox complications, motor vehicle accidents, suicide and violence. Today, I am an advocate for kids, and it is one of the things I’m most proud of.
When you curl up on the couch to watch a movie, are you most likely to have a bowl of popcorn, chocolate or box of tissues?
When I curl up on the couch to watch a movie, I will have a blanket, bowl of popcorn with extra butter and a Mountain Dew — don’t judge me!
My Monday–morning must have is … ?
A 12oz coffee, prayer and pep talk with myself to get through the upcoming week.
Do you dunk your Oreos in milk, lick off the icing, eat them as they are or avoid them altogether?
First and foremost, I like the original flavor, but I love the yellow cookie with vanilla or lemon icing. With that being said, if I do eat the regular Oreos, I have a very specific system. I have to have an even number of Oreos. I take 2 cookies at a time and first, I separate each cookie. Second, I eat the part of the cookie that doesn’t have icing. If I didn’t get a clean split, I eat the side that has the least amount of icing. Thirdly, I place the 2 halves with icing together and eat the newly formed cookie.
I know you must be thinking why not just buy the Double Stuf. … That is with the Double Stufed! So, I guess I make a quadrupled stuffed Oreo.
Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. The “Queen City” is home to the Bengals, Reds, Kings Island Amusement Park and the BEST chili in the world.
What couldn’t you live without?
I absolutely could not live without the love and support of my family and friends.
What’s your quote, mantra or personal slogan you live by?
I love the quote by Luciano De Crescenzo, which still inspires me today: “We are each of us angels with only one wing, and we can only fly by embracing one another.” That is to say don’t be another crab in the barrel of life! Instead of pitting against one another, stand on the backs of those that have come before you to reach to the top. When you’ve made it, reach back and pull others up with you. Make a difference!
Do you have something people may not know about you?
I am a thrill seeker. I have been on multiple hot air balloon rides, sky dived, zip lined, kayaked in the Mediterranean Sea around the Maltese Island of Comino, and hiked active volcanoes of Mt. Etna and Mt. Vesuvius. I also went lava chasing on Mount Etna, Europe’s highest and most active volcano. In addition, I’ve paraglided off the cliffs of Taormina, Italy. My next adventure will probably be bungee jumping over a waterfall.
Something you’ve always wanted to do and still want to do it?
I have always wanted to see the world. My goal is to travel to all 195 countries of the world and experience the many different cultures. I have been fortunate enough to explore 42, but there’s still so much uncharted territory for me. I guess I better get moving. Time for a vacation!
