There’s truly no one-size-fits-all solution for families navigating our new normal amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. While one family can’t wait to stuff the pool floats in the car and head to the pool, another frets that their very young children will touch every surface possible with their hands while in public spaces.
Finding a comfort level that’s right for your family as sports, stores and public areas open can be stressful and unnerving. That’s why Akron Children’s is putting together a 5-part blog series to help families figure out what’s right — and not right — for them. After all, we’re in this together.
Featuring: Dr. Sladjana Courson, a pediatrician at Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics, Akron East
Some parents may be concerned about bringing their children to the doctor’s office at this time. But, we want you to know that at Akron Children’s Hospital Pediatrics, we have done everything we can to make our appointments clean, safe and productive.
We’ve seen how important vaccines can be in protecting children from disease, especially while we wait for one for COVID-19. While we wait, we want you to know it’s still important to protect your children from other diseases. One of these is measles. Last year alone, there were more than 1,300 cases in 31 states, and that broke a 25-year record for the most cases. Whooping cough is another major concern, especially in young infants.
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have both placed immunizations, and well checks at a very high priority. Some immunization rates in our country have dropped 40 to 70 percent, in some places.
Some may feel that we are keeping our kids at home so we don’t need to vaccinate them. But, as social distancing restrictions are being lifted and people are in public spaces more, we are placing our children at higher risk of contracting these diseases.
We encourage you to contact your child’s pediatrician if you have any questions or concerns – or you need to make an appointment. We are always here for you to provide high-quality care. Thank you.
