Social distancing is an important factor in reducing the risk of COVID-19 exposure. Akron Children’s has implemented Mobile Check-in, which allows families to confirm arrival and then wait in their vehicles until it’s time for their appointments. Here are FAQs on the new Mobile Check-in service:
Q: How does Mobile Check-in work?
A: If you have a mobile phone number in your child’s medical record and you have texting capabilities, you’ll receive a text an hour before your child’s appointment arrival time. Click the link in the text message when you reach the Akron Children’s facility for your child’s appointment. You will receive a confirmation text that reminds you to wait in your vehicle. Once we determine appropriate spacing is available inside the building, you’ll receive a third text to let you know it’s OK to come in for your appointment.

Kelly Quigley and her children, Jack and Adalyn, utilize Mobile Check-in for their appointment.
Q: Why is Akron Children’s using Mobile Check-in?
A: We want you to feel safe coming back to Akron Children’s facilities. Along with wearing masks, asking health screening questions and sanitizing, social distancing through Mobile Check-in is another way to protect our patient families and staff members.
Q: Are all Akron Children’s buildings and departments using Mobile Check-in?
A: All locations are included. Walk-in outpatient departments such as laboratory, radiology, urgent care and the emergency room are not included. The sleep, dialysis and pain centers are also excluded.
Q: Do I still need to register for my child’s appointment if I use Mobile Check-in?
A: Yes. Once you enter the building for your child’s appointment, please stop at the welcome center or department front desk to complete the check-in process.
Q: If my child has multiple appointments in one day, will I receive Mobile Check-in texts for each appointment?
A: If you have one child with multiple appointments on the same day, you will only receive Mobile Check-in text messages for your first appointment. However, you will receive a general appointment reminder call or text for every appointment.
Q: Will I get multiple text messages if I have more than one child with appointments in the same day?
A: Yes. You will receive a text message for each child with an appointment. It is important to click on the link for each child to let the staff know each child is here for their appointment.
Q: Are there exceptions to using Mobile Check-in?
A: Yes. Families who don’t have a mobile device or texting capabilities – or those who arrive by public transportation or need an interpreter – can enter the building immediately. Standard text messaging rates apply, depending on your phone plan.

Families will receive three texts in preparation for their appointment.
Q: Someone else is going to bring my child to the appointment. May I forward the Mobile Check-in texts?
A: Yes. You may forward the text with the link, so the adult accompanying your child can report their arrival. Remember, you’ll need to let the adult know when you receive the text that it’s time to go inside for the appointment.
Q: What if I don’t receive a text?
A: If you don’t receive a text within 15 minutes of your appointment time, please go into the building. Staff members will confirm the correct mobile phone number is on file.
Q: Will I get a Mobile Check-in text if I make a same-day appointment?
A: If there is less than an hour between the time you made the appointment and your scheduled arrival time, you won’t receive a Mobile Check-in text message.
