The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued new tackling guidelines last week to improve the safety of all youth football players on the field. The recommendations were compiled after an AAP committee reviewed 114 research studies.
I want to share a recent initiative I’ve been apart of called The Smartest Team, a documentary about preventing concussions in young football players. It takes place in Newcastle, Oklahoma, where a high school football team was experiencing a high number of concussions.
As college and pro football kicks off this week, be on the lookout for major changes to the game’s safety rules. Namely, the changes are centered around the targeting rule and the strike zone in an attempt to increase safety of the young men out on the field.
